208+ Food Blogger Hashtags to Accelerate Your Instagram Growth
Hashtag basics
What are hashtags, and why are they so important for food bloggers?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock without cell service for the last 10 years, you probably know what hashtags are by now, but just in case you don’t, here’s a (very) brief outline.
Hashtags are essentially keywords or phrases that are preceded by the “#” symbol, and are commonly used on social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter to describe whatever it in the post.
Each hashtag is a clickable link that will take you to every other post using the same hashtag.
For example, if you click on the hashtag #burger, then you will be taken to a collection of every other Instagram post that has used the same hashtag – if people are using hashtags correctly, you should find a tonne of images of burgers.
By using hashtags, food bloggers can categorise their content and make it more discoverable to a wider audience, as well as connect with individuals who are interested in the same things that they are, creating a sense of community.
The importance of choosing the right hashtags for your posts
It’s important to note that when using hashtags, it’s important to choose relevant and specific hashtags that accurately represent the content of the post.
Using irrelevant hashtags (such as #pizza with a picture of you doing yoga) can make the post look spammy or inauthentic, which can actually hurt your engagement.
After all, the whole point of using hashtags is to find people who are interested in the things you are posting.
People searching for #pizza want to find images of pizza, and they may well go on to follow the accounts posting the best and most interesting images.
If you’re using hashtags that simply don’t match your content, you’re not going to have the right eyes on your content, and you won’t grow a following.
Common mistakes to avoid while using hashtags
While hashtags can be a powerful tool to increase engagement and reach on social media, there are some common mistakes that you should avoid to ensure that your hashtags are effective.
Here are some common mistakes to avoid when using hashtags:
Using too many hashtags
While hashtags can increase the visibility of your posts, using too many of them can be overwhelming and spammy.
The official Instagram creators account actually posted a video advising users not to use more than 3-5 hyper relevant hashtags per post.
On TikTok, try not to use more than 3 hashtags.
Using irrelevant hashtags
As I’ve already touched on this, I won’t go on about it too much more, but you should remember that using hashtags that are not related to your post can make your content look spammy and inauthentic.
Always use hashtags that are relevant to the content of your post, and spend some time looking through the posts in a certain tag to make sure that your content is the right fit.
Using oversaturated hashtags
While using popular hashtags can increase the visibility of your post, using only the most popular hashtags can make your content difficult to find among the millions of other posts using the same hashtags.
Using niche-specific or less popular hashtags can help your posts to stand out and reach the right audience.
Many creators say that the sweet spot is between 10,000 – 100,000 when it comes to the numbers of times a hashtag has been used, and anything over 1,000,000 should be written off entirely.

Below are some of the most popular food blogger hashtags on Instagram.

Niche-specific food blogger hashtags
You might think that ‘food’ is a niche in itself, but that is way too broad, and you need to narrow it down if you want to stand out from the crowd and become a successful food blogger.
I go into this the importance of niching down more detail in my post about choosing the perfect name for your lifestyle blog, but the general gist is that it’s much better to be a large fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond.
When you niche down, you attract a far more loyal fan base, meaning that not only will your account grow faster, but that brands will see your content as having more value and will therefore want to work with you.
Niches for food bloggers may include:

Getting even more specific
Another good strategy is to get even more specific with your food hashtags.
Sure, your meal might be vegan, but what’s in it? Could you tag #tofu or #quinoa?
Here are some cheese-related hashtags to get you started:
#cheeseboard
#cheeseplatter
#cheeseplate
#cheeselover
#cheeseaddict
#cheeseporn
#cheeseplease
#cheesegram
#cheeseofinstagram
#fondue
You may also decide to use hashtags from a specific region’s food.
A good example would be hashtags for Italian food:
#italianfood
#italianfoodlovers
#pastapasta
#italiancooking
#italiancuisine
#cucinaitaliana
Being location-specific is another way to attract attention from the people in your area who may be interested in your recommendations.
I’m based in Manchester, so if I were a food blogger, I may use hashtags such as:
#manchesterfood
#manchesterrestaurants
#mcrfood
#manchestereats
#manchesterfoodies
You can also tag brands or restaurants that might go on to share your posts. Examples include #hellofresh or #wagamama.
Food blogger hashtags | Final thoughts
In conclusion, hashtags are a powerful tool if you want to increase your reach and engagement on social media as a food blogger.
Whether you are posting about brunch, desserts, or any other type of food, it’s important to research and choose the right hashtags that reflect your brand, your content, and your audience’s interests.
Remember to avoid using oversaturated or irrelevant hashtags, and to experiment with different hashtags to find the ones that work best for your specific account and content (don’t just use the same 3 every time!).
With the right hashtags and a consistent content strategy, you can build a strong Instagram presence and grow you online community of food enthusiasts, skyrocketing your career as a food influencer or blogger.
